There is something utterly spectacular about standing on a frozen lake. When it is still in the process of freezing and the ice is growing, the lake emits these incredible whale-like groans. I love standing on the ice, burning bursts of wind spiraling around my entire body, and realizing that there is a full ecosystem alive and well just a foot beneath me.
